or “Zigging when everyone else Zags”
A former customer, who is a talented interior designer, called me to meet with her clients about bringing a new look to their kitchen. The existing kitchen had pine cabinets and off-white quartz countertops. The cabinets were starting to show some wear and the clients were just tired of the look.
They briefly considered painting the cabinets, but were (rightfully) concerned that it would only be a temporary fix.
Now if you’ve been watching any HGTV or checking out Houzz – you know that white shaker cabinetry is red hot right now. I do a lot of kitchens in that style and I think it looks great. But as a kitchen remodeler, it’s exciting when someone changes things up. When they told me they were interested in a black, distressed cabinet – I was on board. I love when we can help dramatically transform a space.
We looked at some cabinet samples and they decided on a maple frame, shaker-style in an Espresso with a light rub-through distressing. The doors would be custom manufactured and finished for us in a state-of-the-art facility in Wisconsin. The factory cabinet finish is an industrial, 2-part catalyzed product with a durability and consistency that far exceeds anything that could be applied by a local paint shop.
As soon as the new cabinet doors and drawers went on, I knew we had a winner.
There was a built-in hutch with a wine rack that they wanted to get rid of and wanted the clean look of cabinet doors on both top and bottom.
(Brag alert) While I was working, a crew of painters was also working in the home. After hanging a set of doors I stepped back to check the door alignment and saw one of the painters was also checking it out. He said, “It doesn’t matter how good we are, you’re going to make us look bad.”
