Breaking up the lines of a wall of cabinets before refacing

This was a cabinet refacing project in the Naperville – Aurora area. The customer had an old range hood mounted underneath the “builder grade” oak cabinets. She wanted the cabinets refaced in white and also wanted to add crown molding and break up the straight line of cabinets. If I were to simply raise the cabinet above the hood, the problem becomes how to deal with the crown molding on the sides of the cabinet. The solution was to bring the cabinet up and out.

Step 1: Remove the old doors and the range hood
Step 2: Remove the center cabinet
Step 3: Since I am moving the cabinet both up and out, I mounted 3″ spacer blocks to the wall studs
Step 4: the old cabinet is remounted to the side cabinets and the spacer blocks behind it
Step 6: You can see I’ve refaced the cabinet on the side and the new crown molding can end neatly into the side of the center cabinet
Step 7: I’m in the process of refacing the center cabinet and added a valance below to conceal a new vent
Step 8: The center cabinet has been refaced and the new crown molding wraps around and returns to the wall
