Steve and Nancy contacted me about doing a “hybrid” kitchen remodeling project in their Darien home. By “hybrid”. I mean reface most of the kitchen but also build a few custom elements. The existing cabinets were basic solid oak with granite counters already in place. The golden oak cabinets with the arched door frames were still usable, but dated. They wanted a classic, rich look that fit with the rest of their beautiful home. I showed them some different door styles and they decided on a beautiful, solid cherry cabinet. Cherry is a classic furniture wood that gets even more beautiful with age.
Like many homes built in the late 80’s -early 90’s their kitchen had a built in desk area. They wanted to convert that area into a wine bar.
I made a few sketches based on photos Nancy had sent to me. The final design changed to incorporate more glass and a single wine refrigerator.
I built the wine bar to the exact size we needed and used the exact same doors and wood that would be used to reface the rest of the cabinetry.
As a craftsman, there is so much satisfaction that comes from transforming something ordinary into something beautiful that will hopefully bring enjoyment to their family for many years to come.
